Autumn in Regensburg: Your Escape Between Golden Light and 2,000 Years of History

Autumn walks with a view 

Winzerer Höhen with the Albertus Magnus Trail

Spanning around four kilometers, the Winzerer Höhen park landscape extends across three interconnected areas – from the Dreifaltigkeitsberg via the former silk plantation to the Kager chapel. This naturally designed hillside park repeatedly offers wonderful views over the city and the Danube valley. Those who prefer something more athletic can follow the roughly eight-kilometer Albertus Magnus Trail, which runs from the silk plantation to the former Adlersberg monastery. The path passes through one of the city's most species-rich protected landscape areas and is equipped with an audio trail on the topic of biodiversity – ideal for anyone who wants to learn something while hiking.

Four parks in one afternoon

For a relaxed autumn walk right in the middle of the city, start at Villapark and stroll along Ostenallee and Fürst-Anselm-Allee toward Dörnbergpark. From there, the route continues via Stadtpark to Herzogspark. Along the way, you can collect chestnuts or take a few particularly colorful leaves home for the windowsill.

Steinerne Brücke recreation area

Right on the Danube, where the old town meets Stadtamhof, lies one of Regensburg's most popular recreation areas. The riverside paths invite you to stroll, and four-legged companions are warmly welcome in the green spaces too. The place unfolds its full magic especially at sunset. At the center of it all stands the Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge): an almost 900-year-old masterpiece of architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. All around, both on the riverbank and in the old town, numerous cafés, beer gardens, and bistros invite you to take a break.

Höllbachtal – pure nature, 30 minutes away

Just about half an hour's drive from Regensburg lies the picturesque Höllbachtal, affectionately also known as "the Hell." Between Brennberg and Rettenbach in the Falkensteiner Vorwald, the Höllbach stream winds through a sea of boulders and forest ravines – a sight straight out of a fairy tale. The starting point for the hike is the car park at Postfelden. From there, a short, family-friendly loop leads through the nature reserve.

Autumn bike tour: The Regensburg–Falkenstein cycle ath 

Those who prefer pedaling to walking will find one of the most beautiful routes in the Vorderer Bayerischer Wald on the cycle path between Falkenstein and Regensburg. The roughly 40-kilometer tour is considered easy to ride, with about 35 percent of the route paved. Particularly convenient: until early October, the "Radlbus" (bike bus) on line 34 – including a trailer for bicycles and e-bikes – takes you comfortably to Falkenstein, so you can start the tour leisurely from there.

Cultural enjoyment – even in rainy weather

If it does happen to rain, your autumn getaway doesn't have to be ruined. At the World Heritage Visitor Center right by the Salzstadel, you can learn more about Regensburg's eventful history. Just a few steps further, the House of Bavarian History beckons with interactive exhibitions. Next door at the Brezeria, Bavarian tavern culture is being reimagined: try, for example, the house specialty "pretzel pizza." Film fans will be delighted by the FilmGalerie in the Leerer Beutel: housed in a listed 16th-century granary, it contains a cinema, the Jazz Club Regensburg, the Municipal Gallery, and the restaurant "Leerer Beutel."

Event highlights in autumn

Beyond nature and culture, Regensburg also has a colorful array of events to offer. The Herbstdult traditionally transforms the city into a lively folk festival with rides, stalls, and Bavarian conviviality. The immersive light and video show "Masterpieces" at the old indoor swimming pool on Gabelsbergerstraße offers an extraordinary experience: masterpieces of architectural history come to life on the walls and ceiling around visitors. And anyone interested in the city's young, creative scene shouldn't miss the Pop Culture Festival in October 2026: over 60 events at 20 venues will showcase regional artists from music, theater, literature, film, and visual arts.
